Our story
In the heart of the Belgian countryside, Sylvie grew up with a passion for the outdoors, nurtured by her father's craftsmanship as a saddler. Always feeling the chill of the evening air, she found joy in nature but yearned for comfort that didn’t compromise her love for the outdoors.
The world of equestrian driving introduced her to a unique blanket designed for equestrian athletes, but it lacked a crucial element—full coverage at the back. Inspired by her experiences and motivated to create something functional yet stylish, Sylvie envisioned a solution. Her father, with his artisan skills, crafted a tailored blanket that embraced her warmth while keeping her connected to the great outdoors.
Recognizing the need for a chic and efficient fastening system, her husband introduced a design innovation that transformed the blanket into a fashionable waist wrap, perfect for the modern outdoor enthusiast.
During this creative journey, Sylvie discovered remarkable craftsmen and Belgian factories with a common passion for high-quality textiles for renowned names such as Dries van Noten. This collaboration sparked the birth of Mataluu—a brand dedicated to crafting beautiful, natural waist wraps that provide warmth and comfort during chilly evenings spent outside or at home.
A Deep Love for Craftsmanship
For Sylvie, craftsmanship is more than a tradition—it’s a family legacy woven through generations. Growing up in the Belgian countryside, Sylvie watched her father, a skilled saddler, bring care and expertise to every piece he created, inspired by the values passed down from her ancestors. This world of artisanship sparked a love for timeless, durable materials, the kind that lasts and tells a story of its own.
Her journey, from founding GIMBER to creating the concept store Mamuli, always returns to this same deep-rooted appreciation for quality. With her husband Dimitri, Sylvie found a way to blend her passion for design with a devotion to materials that are both beautiful and sustainable. Mataluu became the perfect expression of this vision—a blend of warmth, elegance, and the kind of craftsmanship that endures.
